Oahu AmakihiChlorodrepanis flava
- ORDER: Passeriformes
- FAMILY: Fringillidae
Basic Description
The Oahu Amakihi is one of the most adaptable Hawaiian honeycreepers, at home in both native mountain forests and Honolulu-area yards and parks. This small songbird has developed some resistance to avian malaria, allowing it to occur almost to sea level—much lower than most other native Hawaiian songbirds. Oahu Amakihi uses its curved bill to drink nectar, eat fruit, and pluck insects from flowers, leaves, and twigs. Males are yellow-green above and bright yellow below, while females and immatures are grayish with faint wingbars.
