AnianiauMagumma parva
- ORDER: Passeriformes
- FAMILY: Fringillidae
Basic Description
The Anianiau is the smallest bird in the Hawaiian Islands, an active little honeycreeper constantly hopping about branches in mountain forests of Kauai. Males are bright yellow overall, while females are slightly more greenish and juveniles are a mix of pale yellow, gray, and white. Anianiau use their short, slightly curved bill to take nectar from flowering plants and pluck insects and spiders from vegetation. With an estimated population of 3,000 to 5,000 adults and a small range increasingly restricted by avian malaria, Anianiau is an endangered species.
