- ORDER: Passeriformes
- FAMILY: Fringillidae
Basic Description
The endangered Kauai Amakihi is the largest and rarest of the three remaining amakihi species, with just a few thousand birds restricted to higher elevation native forest on northwestern Kauai. Adult males are olive green above and yellowish below, with dark lores (the space between the eye and bill) and a pale, strongly curved bill. Females are duller, with a smaller bill. This Hawaiian honeycreeper moves energetically along trunks and branches in search of insects and also feeds on nectar and fruit.
