Petite, trim sparrow with a small bill, slender body, and fairly long, notched tail. Mostly a pale, tan-and-gray bird with a contrasting face pattern. The pale gray collar is a helpful mark at all times of year.

Brewer’s Sparrows are more nondescript and grayer overall than Clay-colored Sparrows, with much less contrast on the face. Also note the crown stripe is weak on Brewer's, but distinct on Clay-colored Sparrows.
