Migration

The Lapland Longspur is a short-distance migrant. They leave their breeding territories in late August and September, often arriving on their wintering grounds by early November. The species spreads out across most of the United States and southern Canada in the winter, with highest densities in the western Great Plains. They depart their wintering grounds by March, and males arrive back on the tundra by mid-May.
