Black NoddyAnous minutus
- ORDER: Charadriiformes
- FAMILY: Laridae
Basic Description
The Black Noddy is a widespread inhabitant of far-flung tropical islands in the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. These graceful terns are typically sooty black overall with a gleaming white crown, although birds in the main Hawaiian Islands are browner above, with a grayish nape and tail. Black Noddies breed in huge colonies, often nesting in trees and bushes but also using cliff ledges at some sites. They typically forage over shallow waters near nesting islands, congregating in large flocks in search of small fish and squid.
