Basic Description
The Lavender Waxbill is an exquisite mixture of cool blue-gray upperparts, silvery underparts, and a flaming crimson tail. Native to West Africa and introduced to the Hawaiian Islands, this diminutive songbird often joins flocks, giving high-pitched contact calls. Flocks sometimes include other small finch species. Lavender Waxbills often forage on the ground in grassy, weedy habitats, using their thick, purple-tinged bill to feed on grasses and other seeds.
