Calls

Both sexes call, with pairs frequently calling back and forth to each other. Birds usually vocalize only in flight and around breeding sites. Peak vocal activity is a few hours after sunset. The two most common calls are variations on “ooh-ah-ooh,” which has given rise to the Hawaiian name for this species, Uau. The first call is resonant and low-pitched, while the second is raspy and nasal.
