Erckel's Spurfowl Identification

A medium-sized game bird with a heavy hooked bill. The thick yellow legs have two spurs on the back. The body is heavily streaked with gray, white, chestnut, and black.

Upperparts grayish-brown, with rich chestnut, gray, and white streaking on the neck, mantle, and flanks.

A full-bodied game bird with a chestnut crown, black stripe behind the eye, whitish underparts with chestnut and black teardrops, and grayish upperparts with maroon and white markings.

Forages on the ground, where it feeds on insects, seeds, and other plant items.

Often calls from an elevated perch, but otherwise largely stays to dense plant cover.

Inhabits steep, rocky slopes covered with shrubs and grasses.
