Common BulbulPycnonotus barbatus
- ORDER: Passeriformes
- FAMILY: Pycnonotidae
Basic Description
The Common Bulbul is one of Africa’s most common birds—a familiar sight and sound around orchards, gardens, and other human habitations. Males sing loudly in a halting, uneven rhythm; pairs and small groups give loud chattering calls. Common Bulbuls are prodigious frugivores, consuming a nearly endless list of fruits. This brownish songbird ranges over much of Africa, with some variation in appearance; the biggest difference is the color of the undertail coverts—white in northern Africa and bright yellow in southern Africa.
