Eastern Warbling Vireo Similar Species Comparison
Main SpeciesEastern Warbling Vireo
A small, stocky songbird with a relatively thick bill and stout, blue-toned legs. The wing is mostly plain, and the face has an “open” look, lacking the strong dark eyeline shown by several similar species.

A medium-sized vireo with grayish upperparts, a plain face with a white stripe over the eye, a white throat, and whitish to light yellowish underparts. Its fast, rollicking song is its most distinctive feature and the best way to distinguish it from Western Warbling Vireo.

Adult
Western and Eastern Warbling Vireos look very similar and are best distinguished by voice. In areas where they overlap, silent individuals may not be identifiable to species. Western Warbling Vireo tends to have a darker, more slender bill and a longer white supercilium, but no single character is reliable for all individuals.

Adult
Red-eyed Vireos are larger than Eastern Warbling Vireos, with a stronger face pattern in which the white eyebrow stripe is bordered above and below by black lines.

Adult
Philadelphia Vireos often have extensively yellow underparts. However, some Philadelphia Vireos have limited yellow below. These paler Philadelphia Vireos are best distinguished from Eastern Warbling Vireos by Philadelphia’s concentration of yellow on the throat and breast (versus flanks in Eastern Warbling) and an eyeline that is darkest in front of the eye (an area that is pale in Eastern Warbling Vireo).
