A Bigger Basket for the #RoyalCam Albatross Chick
July 2, 2025A larger basket is needed for weighing now and the chicks are getting stronger
Since hatching at barely 10 ounces on January 28, the Signal Station Trig chick has grown to just over 14 pounds on day 147 (June 24, 2025). This is around 2 pounds less than her last weighing—which is understandable because she hadn’t been fed since then—and well below average for a chick of her age. But before she could be supplementary fed by DOC Rangers, her parent GLG arrived and provided a substantial meal. After the meal she was reweighed at 17.5 pounds, which brought her up to the average weight for a female of 147 days. Thanks, GLG!
Although the chick is no longer spending lots of time at the nest site, both parents have still been able to find the chick as she wanders, and she now has also established a “play nest” in her new location. Increasingly, chicks are holding their wings out into the wind in preparation for fledging in September, about 240 days after hatch.
With around 100 days to go until fledging, be sure to tune in and watch live as she investigates her grassy surroundings and holds her wings out into the wind in prepration for fledging in September.
