Migration

Long-distance migrant. Nearly the entire population spends the nonbreeding season in sub-Saharan Africa. Birds in the “Greenland” subspecies group fly nonstop for 3–4 days over the North Atlantic during fall migration to reach western Europe or western Africa. A few of these birds turn up in the eastern United States each year, especially during fall migration. “Eurasian” breeders in Siberia, Alaska, and western Canada migrate the full length of Asia to reach Africa. Migrates primarily at night.
