Manu o K\u016b<\/a>, also known as the White Tern, is Honolulu\u02bbs official bird and one of the only native Hawaiian seabirds flourishing in downtown Honolulu. These birds are strikingly beautiful with white plumage, black eyes, and black bill. They nest in trees along busy roads, beaches, and even small boat harbors. A multi-island partnership protects these special seabirds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Manu o K\u016b Festival is an annual event usually held in May to coincide with the US Migratory Bird Treaty Act.\u00a0It\u02bbs a free event with guest speakers, bird scopes and bird walks, Hawaiian dance and music performances, games and prizes for keiki (children), kids nature-themed costume contest (11:30 am), costume characters, instructional art workshops, festival awards, family-friendly crafts and activities, booths manned by groups and organizations working together to help Honolulu\u02bbs official bird thrive in our urban environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival takes place on the stately Coronation Grounds of Iolani Palace<\/a>, founded by a partnership with Conservation Council for Hawaii<\/a> and the\u00a0National Wildlife Federation<\/a>, and includes festival sponsors Hawaii Audubon Society<\/a>, the\u00a0Hui Manu-o-K\u016b<\/a>, and Pacific Rim Conservation<\/a>.\u00a0The guests of honor\u2014the Manu O Ku\u2014are already there, a half dozen tending eggs and chicks in trees on the Palace grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
