We&#8217;re always warmed, cheered, and inspired by the energy on show from even the smallest of birds in winter. A cardinal&#8217;s blast of color, the camaraderie of chickadee flocks, the dainty hardiness of a kinglet or a nuthatch. We love to put up a bird feeder and watch the show. (No feeder? Owl Hoots in the night<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Haunting, thrilling, captivating, evocative, or all of the above? The mysterious sounds of owls are reminders of just how widespread these seldom-seen birds are. Across the board, raptor numbers have more than doubled, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofthebirds.org\/2019\/funding-for-state-wildlife-programs-and-joint-ventures-is-conservation-money-well-spent\/\">2019 State of the Birds Report<\/a>. For those of us who grew up longing for a glimpse of a Bald Eagle or Peregrine Falcon, it&#8217;s one of the clearest examples of positive change in our lifetimes\u2014with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/news\/new-bald-eagle-population-estimate-usfws\/\">a hundredfold increase in Bald Eagles in the Lower 48<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/news\/a-long-awaited-homecoming-for-peregrine-falcons-in-the-finger-lakes\/\">Peregrine Falcons returning to long-empty aeries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Echoing Calls of Loons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone can live near a northern lakeshore\u2014but we hope everyone gets a chance, at least once in their life, to hear the spine-tingling cries of a loon reverberating across the still water. And they do this by running and leaping and raising their wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re basically corralling the fish and trying to corner them in the shallows and eventually they&#8217;ll chase one down and jab down and spear this nice fish out of the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"end-transcript\">End of Transcript<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Granted, there are very good evolutionary reasons why birds prance, shuffle, and sky-point\u2014they may be wooing mates, working out who&#8217;s boss, or dazzling and distracting their prey. We love all those reasons\u2014but we also love the underlying lesson that&#8217;s hard for a human to miss: sometimes you just feel like dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. The Songs of thrushes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Without throwing any shade on owls or loons, we&#8217;d like to suggest that thrushes are the world&#8217;s most beautiful songsters. Murmurations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/macaulaylibrary.org\/asset\/626716693\/embed\" width=\"800\" class=\"ratio-ml\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen title=\"European Starling murmuration\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>European Starlings are perhaps the best known species for creating murmurations\u2014those enormous flocks that artfully swirl across winter skies. Plenty of other species do it, too, from blackbirds to shorebirds.
