No cause has yet been determined, but cases are no longer being reported. Links to state-by-state information are compiled at the end of this article.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>A joint statement of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In May through July, 2021, a newly emerging illness causing crusty eyes, tremors, and paralysis among songbirds caused widespread concern. The illness affected mainly fledgling birds in eastern states including Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and District of Columbia. Many of these states issued advisories to cease providing food or water to birds out of an abundance of caution. These recommendations have been lifted (see below for links to state by state information).<\/p>\n<p>In July 2021, we prepared the following statement with the help of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> to summarize the state of knowledge of experts in state and federal agencies who are working to understand this event. For a detailed summary of the situation, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/updated-interagency-statement-usgs-and-partners-continue-investigating-dc-area-bird-mortality\">see this statement from the U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology does not have experts studying the situation, and the illness was never reported in New York state.<\/p>\n<h3>The main points to know<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Please follow your own state\u2019s guidelines on <strong>whether to take down bird feeders<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/offices\/statelinks.html\">Find your state agency here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Although little is known about the cause, <strong>confirmed cases of the illness are no longer being reported <\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No human health or domestic livestock\/poultry issues<\/strong> have been reported.<\/li>\n<li>The illness is <strong>not caused by any of the major known bird diseases<\/strong> such as West Nile, salmonella, avian influenza, House Finch eye disease, <em>Trichomonas<\/em> parasites, etc.<\/li>\n<li>The species most frequently affected are fledgling (juvenile) <strong>Blue Jays, Common Grackles, European Starlings, and American Robins<\/strong>, along with a few other species. Symptoms include crusty eyes and neurological signs such as tremors or partial paralysis.<\/li>\n<li>We <strong>don\u2019t know if the illness is caused by a disease organism<\/strong> (i.e., virus, bacteria, or parasite), or if it\u2019s the result of a toxic substance in the landscape.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s a disease, we don\u2019t know how it\u2019s transmitted. It <strong>might be directly transmissible from bird to bird<\/strong> (like a cold or the flu), <strong>or might require a vector<\/strong> (such as with malaria, where a mosquito transmits the illness).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do if you find a sick or dead bird<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid handling birds unless necessary. If you must handle them wear disposable gloves, or use an inverted plastic bag over your hand to pick up a dead bird.<\/li>\n<li>Keep pets (including pet birds) away from sick or dead wild birds as a standard precaution.<\/li>\n<li>Report the sick or dead bird to your state wildlife conservation agency for further instructions and to help them track this event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do about bird feeders<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Please follow your own state\u2019s recommendations on whether to take down bird feeders. See below for links to state advisories.<\/li>\n<li>In states without specific guidance on feeders, the Cornell Lab does not currently recommend taking them down, given the lack of confirmed cases and uncertainty about how the disease is transmitted. However, it is fine to take down feeders as an extra precaution if you prefer, since there is plenty of natural food for birds at this time of year.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s always a good idea to keep feeders clean by washing with a dilute bleach solution. Here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/news\/how-to-clean-your-bird-feeder\/\">more about how to clean feeders<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Specific information for New York state residents<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There have been no confirmed cases of the illness yet in New York state.<\/li>\n<li>Because of the lack of confirmed cases in New York state, and uncertainty about how the disease is transmitted, the Cornell Lab is not recommending that feeders in New York be taken down at this time. Note that Audubon New York has recommended taking down feeders, and there is no harm in doing that out of an abundance of caution.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s always a good idea to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/news\/how-to-clean-your-bird-feeder\/\">regularly clean your feeders<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>State advisories<\/h3>\n<p>Updated September 13, 2021:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.delaware.gov\/2021\/06\/30\/scientists-investigate-mysterious-songbird-deaths-in-delaware-several-other-states-and-d-c-area\/\">Delaware<\/a> \u2014 Update: Delaware <a href=\"https:\/\/news.delaware.gov\/2021\/08\/24\/dnrec-to-lift-advisory-on-use-of-bird-feeders-and-baths-as-songbird-mortality-decreases\/\">lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/a> on August 24<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/dnr\/fish-and-wildlife\/wildlife-resources\/wildlife-diseases-in-indiana\/songbird-deaths\/\">Indiana<\/a> \u2014 as of a Sept. 10 update, Indiana&#8217;s do-not-feed recommendation has been lifted<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fw.ky.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/Bird-Mortality-Event.aspx\">Kentucky<\/a> \u2014 in an Aug. 19 update, Kentucky lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/07\/02\/bird-illness-investigation-continues-in-several-states\/\">Maryland<\/a> \u2014 in an Aug. 17 update, Maryland lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njfishandwildlife.com\/news\/2021\/birdmortality21.htm\">New Jersey<\/a> \u2014 in an Aug. 31 update, New Jersey lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiodnr.gov\/wps\/portal\/gov\/odnr\/home\/additional-resources\/division-of-wildlife\/bird-disease-reporting\">Ohio<\/a> \u2014 in a Sept. 8 update, Ohio lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.pa.gov\/Pages\/game-commission-details.aspx?newsid=479\">Pennsylvania<\/a> \u2014 Update: Pennsylvania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.pa.gov\/pages\/game-commission-details.aspx?newsid=493\">lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/a> on August 13<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dwr.virginia.gov\/blog\/dwr-statement-on-sick-and-dying-birds-in-washington-d-c-virginia-maryland-and-west-virginia\/\">Virginia<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Update: Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/dwr.virginia.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/media\/August-19-avian-mortality-event-update.pdf\">lifted its do-not-feed recommendation<\/a> on August 19<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DEEP\/News-Releases\/News-Releases---2021\/DEEP-Asks-Residents-To-Take-Feeders-Down-and-Be-On-the-Lookout-for-Sick-Songbirds\">Connecticut<\/a> (no confirmed cases; <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DEEP\/News-Releases\/News-Releases---2021\/DEEP-Lifts-Feeding-and-Watering-Advisory-Related-to-Sick-Songbird-Illness\">do-not-feed recommendation lifted<\/a> on August 20)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/advisory-report-dead-birds-and-remove-feeders\">Massachusetts<\/a> (no confirmed cases; do-not-feed recommendation amended on August 30)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RhodeIslandDEM\/posts\/2941581709415700\">Rhode Island<\/a> (no confirmed cases; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ri.gov\/press\/view\/41953\">do-not-feed recommendation lifted<\/a> on August 26)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/offices\/statelinks.html\">Find your state wildlife agency here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Updated on September 17, 2021.
