Kansas Lek Treks Prairie-Chicken Festival
April 9, 2026 – April 12, 2026
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the charismatic prairie-chickens up close and personal on their leks or booming grounds as they aggressively defend territories and perform courtship displays. Northwest Kansas offers the unique opportunity to view both Lesser and Greater Prairie-Chicken species where their ranges overlap.
Additional field trips to visit the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, and geological wonders of the region are offered as part of the festival. A pre- and post-festival trip to Nebraska provides an opportunity to see Sharp-tailed Grouse.
Keynote: Kenn Kaufman, author of Field Guide to Birds of North America and many other titles.
Registration opens in December.
