Great Dismal Swamp Birding Festival – Cancelled – Rufuge trails open

April 24

Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, the 2021 Great Dismal Swamp Birding Festival is canceled. However, the warblers and other migrants will still start to arrive in April, and the spring migration should be in full swing by the end of April.

The Refuge trails are open. We are hoping birding groups and individuals will still come out. Visit our website for more information: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/great_dismal_swamp/.
Feel free to call refuge manager Chris Lowie 757-376-2841 (cell)  or 757-986-3705 (office). Address of the refuge headquarters is 3100 Desert Rd. Suffolk, VA  23434.

2022 Festival

In 2022 the Great Dismal Swamp Birding Festival will have free guided bird walks in the Refuge: Jericho Lane, Washington and Cypress Marsh boardwalks (7 am); family activities (10 am to 2 pm). Interpretive nature walks and bus trips to Lake Drummond.

Bird-walk reservations can only be made by calling the Refuge Headquarters during working hours: 757-986-3705. For questions about the festival after Refuge hours, call Judy: 757-816-8989.
