Join Western Michigan birders for the tenth annual Thornapple Woodpecker Festival on Saturday, April 25, 2020, 7:00 a.m. to noon (Eastern time). The location of the Festival, along the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail in Middleville, Michigan, offers wonderful opportunities to see Michigan woodpeckers, including the Red-headed Woodpecker. Participants are to meet at the Middleville Village Hall, 100 East Main Street, for events and guided tours along the Trail. Golf cart rides will be available for those with mobility challenges. Birding presentations are scheduled for 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 10:00 a.m, plus there will be nature-related exhibits and displays in the Village Hall. Participants can also obtain information on visiting the habitat-diverse Maher Sanctuary, located in northern Barry County, for a guided walk.
The Woodpecker Festival is a free event. The Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail follows the Thornapple River and has been called the most beautiful rail trail in Michigan. The paved Middleville section has an established breeding population of the Red-headed Woodpecker, as well as the other five Eastern U.S. woodpeckers. The Thornapple Woodpecker Festival will feature guided birding walks and stationary guides with spotting scopes along the river throughout the morning. Over 50 species are consistently seen on festival day. Canoeing and kayaking are options on your own; a launch for small boats is near the Village Hall parking lot.
