July 4, 2021: Tropicbird Chick Takes Flight, Sets Out Over The Atlantic Ocean

The White-tailed Tropicbird chick fledged on July 4. Check out the nestling’s final health check conducted by Senior Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Madeiros and filmed by our partners at Nonsuch Expeditions – Bermuda on July 2. The nestling was named “Sunny” and was verified as a male. Watch below to learn more about this chick’s amazing story. We hope to see you someday again, Sunny.

April 29, 2021: White-tailed Tropicbird Cam Season Begins With Young Chick Already In The Nest

The White-tailed Tropicbird cam is officially live for the 2021 breeding season. The cam features a newly hatched chick being cared for by its parents. Check out this clip when Senior Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Madeiros was surprised by the hatchling during a nest check on April 24! This marks one of the earliest known tropicbird chicks to hatch on the island, and it was all captured during a routine nest check.

White-tailed Tropicbird Chick Fledges

Get one last look at the White-tailed Tropicbird chick before it leaves the nesting cavity and takes its first flight. On July 6 at 10:25 AM, the chick spent one final moment in front of the cam before fledging. Senior Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Madeiros was there to witness the first flight, and he reports that the young tropicbird looked strong and confident as it took wing out toward the open Atlantic Ocean.

White-tailed Tropicbird Cam Returns For 2020

The White-tailed Tropicbird cam is back for the 2020 breeding season! This year’s chick hatched on April 28 or 29, and it is one of the earliest hatchings recorded by Senior Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Madeiros in his 14-year history tracking these birds.

After exploring the burrow this morning and occasionally peering outside, the White-tailed Tropicbird has fledged! Watch “Pig Pen” move around the burrow and flap its wings before finally taking the plunge into the world outside. Happy fishing and good luck out there young one!

White-tailed Tropicbird Chick Hatches

The White-tailed Tropicbird chick has hatched! Get the first glimpse at the damp, downy chick as it flops into view from underneath its attentive parent. The adults will continue to brood the chick for a short period after hatching. After that, the young tropicbird will be left unattended except for feeding events.
