Watch A Spectacled Owl’s Successful Hunt At The Panama Fruit Feeders

Watch a Spectacled Owl capture a Watson’s climbing rat for a meal at the Panama fruit feeders.

The Panama Fruit Feeder Cam caught a tropical owl on the hunt! It’s a common sight to see a Watson’s climbing rat visiting the Canopy Lodge’s fruit feeder platform during the nighttime hours to sample whatever is left from the day’s offerings. However, this night’s visit ended in an unexpected and rare display of hunting prowess. Watch an adult Spectacled Owl swiftly pounce upon an unsuspecting rodent and fly off with it held securely in its talons.

Spectacled Owls are common in El Valle de Antón, Panama, and are broadly distributed in many kinds of lowland tropical forest such as rainforest, savanna woodland, and dry forest. Due to its reclusive and nocturnal habits it is seldom seen, but its distinctive pulsating vocalizations are a common aspect of the nocturnal chorus in Neotropical lowland forest.
