American Kestrels Welcome Five Eggs In 2025

Watch the female American Kestrel shimmy over her clutch of five eggs.

The American Kestrels are back, streaming live from their nest box in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin! This season promises to be an exciting one, with the female laying a clutch of five eggs—one every other day from April 11–19. Follow the journey of these little falcons on the American Kestrel Cam as they prepare for their eggs to begin hatching around May 14!

Incubation Expectations

During the incubation period, the female spends most of her time huddled over the eggs, while the male steps in to spell her during breaks. You’re likely to catch the male delivering prey—such as small rodents, birds, and insects—either to the nest box or at the perch visible on the Outside Cam view.

Who’s In the Box?

Curious about who’s tending the eggs? Male and female American Kestrels are easy to distinguish by their wings. Males sport striking slate-blue wings, while females have reddish-brown wings, marked with black barring.
