About the Photographer
I use photography as a tool to educate and inspire the public about science and conservation issues. I work closely with researchers in the field, documenting them as they study the environment—whether it's from the deck of a ship or a penguin colony.
My goals in photographing science are to educate the public about science; inspire the next generation of researchers; and communicate the need to protect wild places. My education and training as an oceanographer give me a special insight into photographing marine science. I have spent over a year of my life at sea on research ships, with over half of that time spent in the Arctic Ocean.
In 2007 I spent more than a month in Antarctica with Hugh Powell, the current editor of All About Birds, for a project called Polar Discovery. We visited two colonies of Adélie Penguins and had an amazing time camping out with a few scientists and thousands and thousands of penguins.
These are some of my photos from that expedition. Check out our story archive to find out more about the life of these amazing little penguins.
